CREATURE
MARK
Spring 2023
A project all about recreating an animal in a creative, non literal way. I chose to do a pileated woodpecker because I always see them in nature pecking on trees. I started the design process with research and built from there.
RESEARCH
I researched the organic shapes of a pileated woodpecker. I wanted to emphasize the red head because that is what defines woodpeckers from other birds.
SKETCHES
After thoroughly researching, I began to sketch the shapes of a pileated woodpecker based on images I collected. I focused on the curves and straight lines of the body and specifically how they interact at the top of the head.
DIGITAL ITERATIONS/BODY PROTOTYPES
After sketching, I went to Illustrator to draw the body of the woodpecker. The main shapes I focused on was the round belly, 2 wings, round head, and 2 pointed elements: the beak and red hair. I experimented with red, black and white.
FINAL
CREATURE
MARK
PT. 1
The final creature mark (part one of this project).
DIGITAL IDEATIONS
I experimented with different ideations on Illustrator that incorporated the phrase and the final creature mark.
FINAL CREATURE
INTERPRETATION PT. 2
A classmate created a phrase for the woodpecker and I used the phrase to create a playful interpretive composition. I used the creature mark from part 1 of this project.
BOOK COVERS
Covers for a book about the history and elegance of woodpeckers.
